Explosion kills two at Italian rubber compounder
Time:2008-11-20
The technical director and an operative at a company making rubber compounds near Bologna were killed on 17 November by a violent explosion in a mixer they were working on.

Nine other employees were slightly injured by fragments from the explosion.

According to local sources, the two workers at MarconiGomma in Sasso Marconi were engaged in trials on a series of new formulations when the explosion occurred.

The factory, which employs around 50, was sealed off and local magistrates have taken possession of company computers. They have opened an investigation into possible homicide.

MarconiGomma produces a wide range of rubber compounds for applications in automotive, domestic appliances and industrial parts.

According to one news agency report, the technical director, Fabio Costanzi, a chemical engineer, was a leading authority in the rubber sector in Italy.
